Tesla Cybertrucks Get 2 More Recalls, This Time for Faulty Wipers, Loose Trim

Tesla’s Cybertruck has been recalled again, this time over its windshield wiper failing to work and trunk bed trim potentially coming loose and falling onto the road, according to filings submitted to US transportation regulators this month and posts on Tesla’s website.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the Cybertruck’s sole front wiper can stop working, thereby increasing the risk of a crash if visibility becomes low or nonexistent due to rain, snow, or other debris blocking driver vision.

Some Cybertruck drivers have already reported problems with their wipers failing. One said the only way to drive in the rain without a working wiper was to “hang out the window” of the Cybertruck to see the road. Others noted that resetting the truck doesn’t fix the problem.

According to Tesla and the NHTSA, the wiper failure is an electrical issue with its wiper motor. “Excessive electrical current” has been causing some of the wiper motors to fail, according to the recall report. Tesla will replace the motors for free and notify truck owners by mid-August.

The wiper failure will likely affect 230 Cybertrucks out of a possible 11,600, the NHTSA estimates. But all Cybertrucks made between Nov. 13, 2023, and June 6, 2024, are being recalled.

All Cybertrucks made between Nov. 13, 2023, and May 26, 2024, are also being recalled due to a problem where trunk bed trim may have been “improperly adhered.” The NHTSA estimates that 113 Cybertrucks have the loose trim issue out of a potential 11,383.

“A loose applique can detach from the vehicle, creating a road hazard for following motorists and increasing the risk of a crash,” the NHTSA explains. Some Cybertrucks might also have missing applique, or applique that has been “delaminated” due to a factory error.

“Tesla surveyed and assessed the retention of sail appliques on vehicles in the field and found additional instances of loose or detached appliques due to improper installation,” the report notes. Tesla also plans to fix this issue for free and will notify impacted owners.

These recalls come just two months after Tesla recalled them for faulty accelerator pedal covers, which could dislodge while driving and force the accelerator down.

Tesla has repeatedly delayed or cancelled Cybertruck deliveries with little public explanation right before a recall is issued. It happened with the pedal cover issue and again with the wiper motor problem. All of the Cybertruck’s four recalls have occurred this year, with the first being a warning light issue impacting virtually every Tesla vehicle ever made.

This month, Tesla also issued a recall of 125,000 vehicles over a faulty seatbelt warning system, though that’s being fixed with an over-the-air software update. A full list of recent Tesla recalls can be viewed on the company’s website.
